Bakewell’s own multi award winning brewery, Thornbridge, has been described by leading beer writer Adrian Tierney-Jones as “arguably the first British Craft Brewery”.

The brewery, established in 2005 in the grounds of Thornbridge Hall, has had considerable success - with 30 of their beers wining over 350 industry and consumer awards in regional, national and international competitions!

A new state-of-the-art brewery at Bakewell was opened in September 2009, with the aim of continuing to brew high quality cask, keg and bottled beers, while developing new recipes through innovation and the exploration of new and exciting ingredients. The original Hall Brewery continues to operate, developing new, seasonal and speciality beers.
  • "Thornbridge Brewery is one of the most acclaimed and respected breweries in Britain….and given the natural elegance of their beers and styling you can imagine them having been there for centuries."

Craft Beer – 365 Best Beers In The World Chris Hall and Craig Heap 2103

  • "Without the weight of history that shackles so many British brewers Thornbridge courageously ventures into areas of experimentation and innovation where others fear to tread."

Ben McFarland Beer writer of the year 2004, 06, 11 and 12

  • "Thornbridge was founded in 2005 but is already considered a vanguard of the new breed of British brewers."

Tim Webb and Stephen Beaumont from the World Atlas of Beer

  • "As Thornbridge emerges on a national and even international stage, the people running it retain the energy and enthusiasm of a new start-up. And they just seem to have so much damn fun doing what they do."
